Christenings and naming ceremonies

Venues         Christening gowns - Invitations - Cakes etc

Christenings

  • involve a religious ceremony as they are primarily about welcoming your child into the Church
  • usually held on a Sunday (speak to the vicar at your local Church about arranging a date)
  • children can be Christened at any age. It’s even possible to have more than one child Christened at once eg: siblings
  • you might be required to attend Church regularly before or after the ceremony
  • It is usual to appoint Godparents whose role is to take an interest in the child's upbringing. Most children these days have up to three godparents
  • Christening ceremonies are usually free although you might be asked to make a donation to the Church

Naming ceremonies

  • non-religious but structured
  • can be held in a local registration office or even in a hotel function room
  • include readings, music or poetry
  • the non-religious equivalent of Godparents (supporting adults) can be chosen but it’s not compulsary
  • Naming ceremonies can cost £80 upwards if a registrar is present (weekends are more expensive than weekdays)
