Breastfeeding

"Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first 6 months (26 weeks) of an infant’s life, as it provides all the nutrients a baby needs" (www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk)

Breastfeeding is the most natural way to feed your baby. Some women have no problems at all but many experience some difficulties along the way which can easily be resolved. The key is to ask your doctor, midwife, breastfeeding counsellor or health visitor for help and advice as soon as the problem occurs. However, you might find the answer you are looking for in our list of frequently asked questions.

Lots of new mums find that going to a breastfeeding support group helps as they can share hints and advice with other breastfeeding mums and as most groups are run by a midwife there is usually a professional on hand if you have any worries.

If you are thinking of breastfeeding but don't know much about it or you are just starting out and are not sure if you are doing it correctly please check out our How to Breastfeed section.
